Berkeley-Claremont District

The existing garden design was inappropriate for the Italian Palladio house and not functional for outdoor entertaining. Program: The Design must fit the house style, be refined and be carefully crafted using stone, ceramics, glass, metal and appropriate planting for enjoying throughout the seasons.

Design is geometric and the paving and details are varied but remain true to the theme. The tile patterns and material selection was a collaboration between CMC and the owner. Natural stone travertine faced the seat walls combined with European ceramic tile pavers, glass tiles and stone paversand tiles create the visually dynamic boundary between the hardscape and the plantings. A water basin was centered under a hand crafted rose arch. Storm water is directed to cleverly disguised area drains or to a slit drain covered with spaced apart travertine squares. The fan palms are from the Mediterranean environs and were selected for their bluish green undersides that complement the blue/green glass tiles.
